P 2526 Graduation Requirements - Career Technical Program of Studies

Waiver of Required Academic Credit for Students Completing a Career Technical Program of Studies

Information taken from the Graduation Requirements for Students in Missouri Public Schools, MO DESE, March, 2015:

Local Board of Education policy may permit a waiver of one unit of academic credit (English language arts, mathematics, science or social studies) for students who complete a three-unit career technical program of studies.  The three-unit career technical program must constitute a planned program leading to specific career related competencies, not simply any three units of credit.  The academic subject in which the wavier is granted must be one in which the student has received substantial instruction in the career and technical education program.  For example, students completing a three-unit agricultural education program or a health sciences program might be permitted to waive one unit of science; students completing a three-unit electricity/electronics program might be permitted to waive one unit of mathematics.

There are two exceptions to waiving required academic credit for students who have completed a CTE program of studies:

  1. Students must take one semester of Government.  Waiver is possible if a student transfers from out-of-state and they can furnish documentation deemed acceptable by the school district of the student’s successful completion in any year from the 9-12th grade of a course of instruction in the institutions, branches, and functions of state government, including local governments and of the government of the US and in the electoral process.
  1. Student must take the end of course exam required for any waived course.

Glasgow High School students may take the following agriculture courses to waive the third required science academic unit of credit:

Embedded Credit through Moberly Area Technical School

The Glasgow School District will allow Juniors/Seniors enrolled in programs through the Moberly Area Technical Center (MATC) the opportunity to earn (1) additional credit in Mathematics and/or Communications Arts over the course of four semesters.  Embedded credit is labeled as pass/fail on the transcript.

To enroll in the Embedded Credit Program, a student must have the counselor at Glasgow High School verify that the embedded Math and/or embedded Communication Arts credits are needed to meet the student’s graduation requirements.

Embedded Credit

The Embedded Credit Program is an opportunity for students to earn one (1) credit in Mathematics and/or Communication Arts along with the six (6) credits students will learn in their technical program at Moberly Area Technical Center during the student’s junior and senior years.

To enroll in the Embedded Credit Program, a student must have their home school counselor verify that the Embedded Math and/or embedded Communication Arts credit is needed for the student’s graduation requirements; counselors will then initiate embedded credit enrollment for the student at MATC.
