P 1470 Public Gifts to Schools

Gifts which may serve to enhance and extend the work of the schools may be received by the District. It shall be the general policy of the District to direct those who desire to make contributions to consider equipment or services that are not likely to be acquired from public fund expenditures.

Individuals or organizations desiring to contribute funds, supplies or equipment will counsel with school officials regarding the acceptability of such contributions in advance of the solicitation of funds or the making of budgetary appropriations.

To be acceptable, a gift must satisfy the following criteria:

  1. Have a purpose consistent with those of the school.
  2. Be offered by a donor acceptable to the Board.
  3. Will not add to staff load.
  4. Will not begin a program that the Board would be unwilling to take over when gift or grant funds are exhausted.
  5. Would not bring undesirable or hidden costs to the school system.
  6. Place no restrictions on the Board.
  7. Will not be inappropriate or harmful to the best education of the pupils.
  8. Will not imply endorsement of any business or product; this does not prohibit the name or the logo of the benefactor.
  9. Will not be in conflict with any provision of the school code or public law.

All gifts, grants, and bequests shall become District property. Before approval by the Board, all donors shall consult with the Superintendent and principal before gifts are presented to ensure usability of gifts.

The Board appreciates gifts to the schools which provide items such as school supplies and glasses for needy students. These efforts should be coordinated through the appropriate administrative office.
