P 5630 Bus Routes and Schedules

Bus routes, schedules and stops will be developed under the direction of the Superintendent. The Board will initially approve all bus routes no later than October 31 of each school year; the final bus routes must be approved by June 30 of each school year. The purpose of bus scheduling and routing will be to achieve maximum service with a minimum fleet of buses, rendering reasonable and equal service to all eligible students.

Bus routes will follow the most direct roads practicable for bus travel, to serve those students entitled to transportation service. Where an alternate route may be selected without sacrifice of efficiency or economy, preference will be given to that route serving the largest number of students more directly.

Routes will be designed to eliminate as many turn-around points as practical, and to employ as nearly as practicable the full carrying capacity for each bus trip. No bus will be overloaded. Buses shall be routed on dead-end roads or cul-de-sacs only if the distance that the child has to walk to the pickup point is more than one-half mile, unless an exception is granted by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Pupil Transportation Section. New routes will be established only when capacity of the existing routes has been reached or is imminent.

Authorized bus stops will be located at convenient intervals for students and in places where students may board and get off, cross highways and await arrival of buses with the utmost safety permitted by highway conditions. Where bus stops also serve as turn-around points, parents are expected to provide an adequate area in which to turn a bus around. The District will not provide nor maintain a bus turn-around. Bus routes will not be extended more than one-eighth (1/8) mile to secure an adequate turn-around.

Students will ride their assigned bus, getting on and getting off at their regularly assigned stops unless a note from their parent/guardian authorizes students to depart at other than their regular stop or to ride a bus other than their assigned bus. Notes will be subject to approval by the Superintendent/designee.

In a special case when parents/guardians have a valid reason to have their child picked up and dropped off at a stop other than their assigned stop, communication requesting such a change shall be directed to the Superintendent/designee, who may authorize such change provided such stop is on their regular route or a route which has room for additional riders.
