P 2921 Participation by Non-Traditional Student

Purpose

The District strives to offer equitable access to extra-curricular activities for all stakeholders while still allowing the District to monitor the quality and quantity of credits a student takes to qualify for extracurricular activities and without diminishing the commitment of full-time public school students.

Requirements

In order for non-traditional students to participate in extracurricular activities, they must receive 86% of "seat-time" credits per semester within the District.

The District has elected to set its minimum attendance to qualify for extra-curricular activities at 3 consecutive credit-bearing classes per semester.

Parents/Guardians wishing to use this policy must notify the District no less than two (2) weeks prior to the start of school to begin the enrollment process, pending clearance of all MSHSAA eligibility rules.

While enrolled in the District, all non-traditional students will be held to the same policy and standards as traditional students set forth by student and activity handbooks, including:

  1. School grading, attendance, citizenship, and discipline standards;
  2. Random drug testing (as are all extra-curricular students);
  3. Rules pertaining to transportation to and from activities;
  4. All MSHSAA by-laws; and
  5. State assessments.

Please take notice of the following requirements, as set forth in the MSHSAA By-Laws:

  1. Provide clear confirmation of the member school's close of the semester in December and May.
    The same timeline for completion of "outside" classes for the non-traditional student is required.
  2. Non-traditional students must meet the essential eligibility standards, including the academic standards, citizenship standard, semesters rule, age rule, etc.
  3. All non-traditional students should be held to the same policy and standards as other nontraditional students in the high school, unless specific circumstances dictate otherwise.
  4. Any student whose enrollment status changes from being a non-bona fide student to being a bona fide student is a transfer student, and becomes ineligible to represent a member school until a transfer form is filed and an eligibility ruling is rendered.
  5. Each member school has the ability to be more restrictive than the MSHSAA By-Laws when establishing local policies.
