The Board of Education believes that vocational and technical education is critical to the development of skills necessary for satisfying careers. The underlying foundation for all academic courses should be the relationship of class concepts to practical job application. Occupational education shall encompass career awareness, career exploration and career preparation to include vocational training opportunities, either within the local high school(s) and/or local area vocational and technical schools.
District vocational programs shall meet all state and federal guidelines and requirements, including the formation and utilization of advisory councils in all areas.
Northwest Technical School (NTS)
NTS programs offer students the opportunity to gain the needed skills for a specific trade/program. Elective credits, and in some cases a science or math credit, may be obtained.
Requirements
- Attend a vo-tech tour.
- Northeast Nodaway Vo-Tech Application completed by due date.
- Attendance rate of 95% or higher during the semester prior to enrolling in NTS. If application is received with a 90%-94% attendance rate, that student will be placed on attendance probation with weekly check-ins with administration.
- Maintenance of 95% or higher attendance rate during enrollment at NTS. If a student has a 90%-94% attendance rate, that student will be placed on attendance probation with weekly check-ins with administration.
- Cumulative GPA of 2.0 prior to enrolling in NTS.
- Maintenance of 2.0 GPA or higher.
- Student must be on track to graduate; 12 credits must be completed prior to beginning Junior year and 19 credits must be completed prior to beginning of Senior year.
- Desired program must be aligned to the student’s Individual Career Academic Plan (ICAP).
- Student must be in attendance at school for at least two instructional hours per day.
Transportation
- All students must utilize the school provided transportation to and from NTS. If a student misses the bus, the students shall check into the office and alternate transportation will be provided. If administration deems this to be a habitual practice, the student may be required to stay at school.
- Students may be allowed to provide his/her own transportation on occasion if prior approval by the NTS instructor and principal is granted. Parent/guardian permission is required, regardless of the age of the student.
Additional Information
- Preference for enrollment approval will be given to Seniors
- Programs may change without notice based on availability.
- The District may un-enroll a student from NTS at any time, for any reason, including but not limited to tardies, behavior, or attendance.
- Students who attend NTS will not be allowed to participate in School to Work.
School to Work
Northeast Nodaway offers Senior students the opportunity to earn academic credit while learning outside of the school building during the school day. The student will work under the supervision of a professional in the trade/profession he/she is wishing to explore.
A student who participates in the School to Work program has the opportunity to earn two credits, one per semester.
Requirements
- Northeast Nodaway School to Work Application, including two written letters of recommendation, completed by due date.
- Attendance rate of 95% or higher at the completion of Junior year. If application is received with a 90%-94% attendance rate, that student will be placed on attendance probation with weekly check-ins with administration.
- Maintenance of 95% or higher attendance rate during Senior year. If a student has a 90%-94% attendance rate, that student will be placed on attendance probation with weekly check-ins with administration.
- Cumulative GPA of 2.0 at the completion of Junior year.
- Maintenance of 2.0 GPA or higher during Senior year.
- Student must be on track to graduate; 20 credits must be completed prior to beginning Senior year.
- Desired placement must be aligned to the student’s Individual Career Academic Plan (ICAP).
- Student must be in attendance at school for at least two instructional hours per day.
Business Partner (Employer) Requirements
- Business must provide a safe learning environment in which the student is under close supervision of the employer a minimum of 225 minutes per week.
- The employer will be responsible for liability insurance for the duration of the student’s school to work experience.
- The employer will provide the District documentation of the student’s performance and evaluations.
Transportation
- Students are required to arrange his/her own transportation to the partnering business.
- Parent/guardian permission is required, regardless of the age of the student.
Additional Information
- Once a business assignment has been made, students will not be allowed to change until semester.
- The District may un-enroll a student from School to Work at any time, for any reason, including but not limited to tardies, behavior, attendance or unsatisfactory evaluation from student’s supervisor.
- Students who participate in School to Work will not be allowed to attend NTS.
- A student may be paid during the School to Work experience, but it is at the discretion of the employer providing the learning opportunity.
