P 2656 Student Cell Phone Usage

Developments in cell phone technology in recent years have resulted in enhanced communication opportunities.  However, the use of cell phones in schools poses increasing risks of school disruptions, bullying, criminal activity, and academic dishonesty.  As a result, student cell phones, digital cameras, and similar electronic devices may not be used or displayed during the school day, as well as, in dressing areas during extracurricular activities.  Violations of this policy will result in consequences as outlined in the respective building student handbook. 

Electronic devices may be used in serious, unexpected and dangerous situations that require immediate action. Such emergencies are defined in the law.  

Exceptions to the policy may include situations where a student is directed to use such a device by a district employee for instructional purposes or for specific educational or health needs as specified under the law.  

Immunity

School employees are immune from liability provided they are acting in good faith and are adhering to the Policy’s disciplinary procedures.

Definition

For purposes of this policy, the following definitions will apply:

Electronic Personal Communication Devices means portable devices used to initiate, receive, store, or view communications, information, images, or data electronically.
