P 2656 Student Cell Phone Usage

Developments in cell phone technology in recent years have resulted in enhanced communication opportunities. However, the use of cell phones in school poses increasing risks of school disruptions, bullying, criminal activity and academic dishonesty. Therefore, cell phones are not to be used in classrooms and hallways of the Monroe City R-I School District during the instructional day. Upon entering the classroom, any student possessing a cell phone will place their device in a designated holding area. Students who do not place their cell phone in the designated area, or have their phone out in class for any reason, will have their phone confiscated and taken to the office. First Offense: Parent must pick up phone from the office and the student will be assigned one (1) day in-school suspension (ISS) Second Offense: Parent must pick up the phone and the student will be assigned two (2) days of ISS. Third Offense: Parent must pick up the phone and the student will be assigned three (3) days of ISS. Subsequent Offenses: Multiple days of ISS will be assigned to the student. Any student who does not surrender their phone, upon request of a faculty member, will be assigned five (5) days ISS. Picture phone usage is banned in locker room and restroom areas. Violation of this prohibition will result in confiscation of the phone (parent pick up required) and assignment of three (3) days of ISS. Subsequent violations will result in the assignment of out-of-school suspension (OSS)
